Susan concentrates in family law, appellate practice, estate planning, and mediation. She has briefed and argued leading family law cases in the Vermont Supreme Court, and handles divorces involving complex financial issues and extensive marital assets as well as more straightforward divorce matters. Susan has tried many divorce cases and supports a collaborative and cooperative approach to divorce whenever possible. In all cases her goals for her clients are the same: to help them maintain their dignity and integrity during a difficult time in their lives; to provide them with a fair financial settlement; and to help create a climate that will allow them to co-parent their children after the divorce is over.

Susan handles adoptions, prenuptial agreements, postnuptial agreements, surrogacy and sperm donor contracts. Susan also works with clients on estate planning issues and property co-ownership agreements. She has been involved in a number of leading cases, including Baker v. State of Vermont, which established a constitutional right to marriage equality for same-sex couples, and was instrumental in lobbying for the passage of Vermont’s civil union law. She is a founding member of the Vermont chapter of the American Academy for Certified Financial Litigators and a member of the Vermont state courts’ Family Division Oversight Committee.

Susan joined Langrock Sperry & Wool in 1984 after clerking for the Hon. William Hill, Associate Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. She was recognized as Vermont’s first ever “Family Lawyer of the Year” by The Best Lawyers in America®, and has received the same recognition in 2013, making her the only two-time winner in the award's five-year history.

When not practicing law, Susan enjoys walking with her dog and working in her garden while listening to the Red Sox on the radio.
